Coded-aperture Imaging of the Galactic Center Region at Gamma-ray Energies
نویسندگان
چکیده
The first coded-aperture images of the Galactic center region at energies above 30 keV have revealed two strong y-ray sources. One source has been identified with the X-ray source 1E 1740.7-2942, located 0~8 away from the nucleus. If this source is at the distance of the Galactic center, it is one of the most luminous objects in the galaxy at energies from 35 to 200 keV. The second source is consistent in location with the X-ray source GX 354 + 0 (MXB 172834). In addition, y-ray flux from the location of GX 1 + 4 was marginally detected at a level consistent with other post-1980 measurements. No significant hard X-ray or y-ray flux was detected from the direction of the Galactic nucleus (Sgr A*), or from the direction of the recently discovered y-ray source GRS 1758-258. متن کاملAndromeda: A mission to determine the gamma-ray burst distance scale
Andromeda is a wideeld, imaging, hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray instrument capable of detecting gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) a factor 20 times fainter than GRO/BATSE. During 1-year of a two-year mission, it could determine whether GRBs are Galactic or cosmological in origin by searching for an excess of bursts towards the nearby Andromeda galaxy (M31). As a pointed, imaging instrument with sensitivity in...

This letter presents the first results of an observational campaign to study the Galactic Centre with INTEGRAL. The mosaicked images obtained with the IBIS/ISGRI coded aperture instrument in the energy ranges 20–40 and 40–100 keV, give a yet unseen view of the high-energy sources of this region in hard X-and gamma-rays with an angular resolution of 12 ′ (FWHM). We report on the discovery of a s...

متن کاملPositron Annihilations at the Galactic Center: Generating More Questions Than Answers
The bulge of our Galaxy is illuminated by the 0.511 MeV gamma-ray line flux from annihilations of nonrelativistic positrons. The emission is strongly concentrated at the Galactic Center (GC), in contrast to gamma-ray maps tracing nucleosynthesis (e.g., the 1.809 MeV line from decaying Al) or cosmic ray processes (e.g., the 1–30 MeV continuum), which reveal a bright disk with a much less promine...
